Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive treatment that involves gently abrading the skin with aluminum oxide crystals while simultaneously applying mild suction. It is used to maintain healthy skin as well as to treat skin damage from trauma, aging, or sun exposure.  Microdermabrasion is a comfortable procedure that is appropriate for all skin types. Clients leave our office with clean skin and a healthy, youthful glow.

Our classic 45-minute microdermabrasion involves several passes over the entire face. A medical-grade microdermabrasion can also be performed on the back, hands, arms or other parts of the body. Your technician will customized your treatment for your skin type and any skin conditions by adjusting vacuum pressure and applying appropriate techniques. Microdermabrasion can be combined with facials and peels for more advanced therapy.  See our Clinical Peels & Facials page for more information.

  • What are the benefits to microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion helps diminish skin imperfections such as:

      • fine lines and wrinkles

      • rough or thickened skin

      • sun- or wind- damaged skin

      • acne scars and other scars

      • age spots, sunspots, and superficial pigmentation

      • blackheads and whiteheads

      • enlarged pores and oily skin

      • general exfoliation and rejuvenation

  • How does microdermabrasion work?

Repeated microdermabrasion treatments assist in stimulating the microcirculation which in turn increases the blood supply to the skin.  Nutrients carried by the blood are needed for skin regeneration, repair and increased cellular turnover.   Regular treatment stimulates new collagen and elastin formation whereby speeding up the regenerative process.  In aging and thickened skin, the gentle abrasion can remove years of debris in only one treatment.  In congested and acne-prone skin, microdermabrasion unclogs pores and, with repeated treatments, prevents blackheads and comedone formation.

  • When should I start thinking about microdermabrasion for anti-aging?

It's never too early to begin prevention therapy.  The sooner one starts with a regulated exfoliation and stimulation program, the more you can help your skin retain its youthful appearance.  Schedule a microdermabrasion or a free consultation with one of our experienced and knowledgeable aestheticians to set a plan for maintaining your youthful skin.

  • Is there any downtime involved?

Microdermabrasion requires no downtime or recovery time.  Because microdermabrasion stimulates blood flow in the skin, clients usually display some amount of redness that last from fifteen minutes to an hour depending on the individual.  Clients are advised to wear sun block for the next 72 hours as microdermabrasion can sometimes make one more sensitive to the sun.

  • How many treatments will I need before I see an effect?

Clients experience softer, smoother and more vibrant-looking skin after the very first treatment.  For problematic areas, a series of 6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks a part is recommended.  Clients with healthy skin may choose to utilize microdermabrasion for maintenance and prevention as frequently as once a month while some find every three to four months sufficient.

Those wishing to use microdermabrasion as part of their anti-aging regimen are advised to consult with us to determine the best combination therapy.  Microdermabrasion can be combined with GentleYag skin tightening, medical facials and peels, and home skin care to produce optimum results without the use of surgery.

  • What part of my body can be treated with microdermabrasion?

Micdermabrasion is most commonly utilized on the face and neck; however, we find benefits with other areas of the body as well, including the hands, chest, back, arms, and legs.  In addition to treatments of the face, microdermabrasion of the chest and hands help to keep the skin soft and healthy as these areas commonly suffer from sun damage, brown spots, and pre-mature aging.  Those with body acne, folliculis, or ingrown hairs will find a benefit to regular microdermabrasion of the areas of concern.  Microdermabrasion is also beneficial to those suffering from keratosis pilaris, a common skin condition that causes rough patches and acne-like bumps, frequently found on the upper arms and thighs.

  • Aren't facial scrubs just as beneficial?

No, many facial scrubs have a tendency to scratch the skin causing irritation.  They are only loosening the dead, outermost skin cell layer and not removing it with a controlled method.  Facial scrubs have not stimulation effects on microcirculation and cannot diminish scar tissue or help smooth fine lines.

We offer free consultations to anyone interested in our services.  During your consultation, you and your technician can discuss what you hope to accomplish and how our services can make you feel better and look great.  A consultation is not always necessary, and many clients choose to just begin treatment.  If getting to our office is a problem, we can schedule a phone consultation - although please keep in mind that it is often necessary to see the client in person.

*Option to Numb Prior to Treatment. For certain laser treatments, we offer the option to the numb the treatment area with Lidocaine 2.5% and Prilocaine 2.5% numbing cream.  This enables us to treat sensitive areas of the body without any discomfort for our clients.  Numbing for Wrinkle Reduction or Skin Tightening is done on-site after a microdermabrasion (visit our skin tightening/wrinkle reduction page for more information).  Numbing for laser hair removal can be done on-site by one of our technicians or off-site by the client before their appointment.  For more information about numbing prior to laser hair removal, visit our laser hair removal page.
