Face & Leg Vein

Visable, enlarged blood vessels are a very common concern among both men and women.  In fact, about 50-55% of women and 40-45% of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem.

These visable, enlarged blood vessels, often called spider veins or burst capillaries, are small red, blue or purple blood vessels which appear web- or tree-like.  They can be found anywhere on the body, but are most usually seen on the face and legs.

Facial veins, medically termed "telangiectasias", are most commonly found on and around the nose, cheeks and chin.  Spider veins on the legs, which are similar in appearance to those on the face, are most often found on the thighs and behind the knee.

Spider veins are the result of a backup of blood and can be caused by hormone changes, exposure to the sun, injuries, etc.  Fortunately, these visible blood vessels are easily removed using laser therapy.

Our vascular lasers are the state-of-the-art Alexandrite (755-nm) GentleLase and the Nd:YAG (1054-nm) GentleYag.  All vascular treatments are performed by our experienced registered nurse,

Toni Dardeno.

  • Which areas of the body can be treated?

The two most common areas of the body where laser vascular therapy is utilized is the face and legs.  Others areas include the chest, arms, and abdomen.

A physical evaluation must be done in order to determine whether a client is a candidate for vascular laser therapy of the legs.  It is sometimes necessary to treat leg veins by sclerotherapy prior to laser therapy as some spider veins are 'fed' by a larger vessel which cannot be removed with the laser.  Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure involving the injection of a sclerosing agent into this larger blood vessel causing the vessel to shrink.  While we don't offer sclerotherapy at our clinic, we can refer clients to a reputable clinic that does.  In cases where sclerotherapy is needed, laser treatments are performed after those larger (reticular) vessels are treated to remove the smaller, superficial veins.

  • What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?

Both spider veins and varicose veins are found on the legs, and distinguishing between the two can sometimes be tricky.  During your consultation, the nurse will be able to tell you whether or not your veins are spider veins.  Varicose veins are enlarged vessels that can be blue, red, or flesh-colored.  They often look like cords and appear twisted and bulging.  They can be swollen and raised above the surface of the skin.  Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins and are found closer to the surface of the skin.  Spider veins are red or blue in color and can look like spider webs or branches of a tree.

  • Do I need a consultation?

We offer free consultations with our laser nurse to determine whether a client is a candidate for vascular laser treatment.  A consultation is not always necessary for facial veins; however, we require consultations for legs veins.  With over fifteen years of experience performing laser vein removal therapy, Toni Dardeno, RN, will be able to determine if the vascular laser is the appropriate treatment and estimate the number of treatments needed.  A quote or the cost per treatment can also be obtained at your free consultation.

  • What can I expect during the treatment?

The total treatment time for vascular laser therapy is usually between 30 and 45 minutes.  As with all laser procedures, clients must wear protective eyewear before the procedure begins.  The GentleLase, used to treat facial veins, and the GentleYag, used to treat leg veins, both produce two simultaneous sensations: a "snapping rubber band" sensation and a "cool wet spray" sensation.  No anesthesia or numbing is necessary.  Ice is applied to the treatment area to decrease heat in the skin and minimize swelling.

During this non-invasive treatment, the laser targets the pigment in the spider vein and emits a precise amount of energy to the blood vessel, heating it and closing it off from the rest of the venous system. The heat absorption causes the blood vessel to coagulate and to subsequently dissolve in the body, thereby disappearing from sight.

  • What is the recovery like after a treatment?

Recovery after a vascular laser treatment depends on the area treated.  Recovery times depend on the extent of the treatment and the individual's capacity to heal. Some redness or purple discoloration may persist for several weeks, or longer. The redness will gradually lighten to a pink tone, and then to a lighter, more natural color.

Face - Removal of broken capillaries on the face most often result in no downtime.  Clients must limit sun exposure and use a broad spectrum sun block of SPF 25 or higher (preferable with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) for at least two weeks after treatment.  Vascular treatments of the face should be space at least six (6) weeks apart.

Legs - Bruising or dark red marks that sometimes resemble cat scratches may result following a spider vein removal treatment on the legs.  This discoloration will fade in 2-3 weeks.   Clients must limit sun exposure and use a broad spectrum sun block of SPF 25 or higher (preferable with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) for at least two weeks after treatment.  After a leg vein treatment, clients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours.  Clients should wait at least eight (8) weeks between vascular treatments on the legs.

  • Will I see immediate results?

Yes, you will notice some vessels totally disappearing leaving a slightly pink, puffy texture to your skin.  This will disappear within a few hours.  Some vessels, however, will coagulate causing a darkening of the vessel.  This vessel will disappear over a one to two month period, similar to the time it takes for a black and blue to go away.

  • How many treatments will I need?

Face - The majority of treated vessels will be gone in one or two treatments. Typically, however,  one to three treatments are needed to completely remove facial and nasal veins

Legs - Vascular therapy on the legs typically require two to three treatments.

Other areas of the body, besides the face and legs, can be treated with laser vein therapy.  Laser treatment of broken capillaries on the chest, for example, are treated similarly to those on the face with the only difference being a greater recovery time for the chest.

We offer free consultations to anyone interested in our services.  During your consultation, you and your technician can discuss what you hope to accomplish and how our services can make you feel better and look great.  A consultation is not always necessary, and many clients choose to just begin treatment.  If getting to our office is a problem, we can schedule a phone consultation - although please keep in mind that it is often necessary to see the client in person.

*Option to Numb Prior to Treatment. For certain laser treatments, we offer the option to the numb the treatment area with Lidocaine 2.5% and Prilocaine 2.5% numbing cream.  This enables us to treat sensitive areas of the body without any discomfort for our clients.  Numbing for Wrinkle Reduction or Skin Tightening is done on-site after a microdermabrasion (visit our skin tightening/wrinkle reduction page for more information).  Numbing for laser hair removal can be done on-site by one of our technicians or off-site by the client before their appointment.  For more information about numbing prior to laser hair removal, visit our laser hair removal page.
